Haa.. haa..choo! , Bless you !

We always plan things to go our way and things end up going the other way around.

For example,

  • You set the alarm clock to wake up at 8.00 am > You’ll be awake at 8.15
  • You call up your friends to join you  for a cendol session at the cendol truck under the tree > Cendol truck not there
  • You plan to leave the house early hoping not to be there late > Your stuck in a massive traffic jam
  • You crave for a good ol’ Original recipe KFC > KFC ran out of chicken.

Expectation vs. Reality = Patience and Creativity

Our expectation may not always be to what we want or wish for and the reality that we get may not be as good or as bad as we imagine.

I remember one day when this monkey was walking along the street and had only three silver and one gold coin ( that’s $1.50 ), a pack of cigarettes but no lighter, and thought to himself:

“Shit, a cup of coffee would be awesome in this cold weather. I Want, and I Need one; But I can only afford a lighter. Damn, if only coffee would be cheaper!”

I continued walking towards my destination and two minutes later, there was a stand giving out Free coffee and cookies to the passerby’s  (they’re not crazy, they’re just promoting some free thing!) and Yay!  I got a free coffee and a cookie  and I get to buy a lighter for my ciggies !

jump for joy!

Few years ago , this monkey traveled to Vietnam for a weekend break. He was so happy that he got to leave his country and get his passport stamped & become a traveler again. As he landed , with a wide smile on his face (because the air smelled different – even though its still oxygen that he’s breathing  &  cos there were so many friendly locals – not knowing they’re actually part time cabbies who are ready to con him) he was prepared to have a great weekend ahead.

After checking into his hotel room, he flicked through the local TV channels, and called the reception for extra clothes hangers, this monkey got changed and suddenly he  realized one thing,

“Damn it ,I left my belt at home ! How am i gonna wear my ultra baggy jeans? hmm.. what should i do now !”

Ten minutes of brainstorming and looking here and there for whatever he can think of, he suddenly thought of one idea,

“Hmm.. i could probably use my phone charger as a belt ?”

So he wrapped his waist with the wire and the plugged remained in his pants pocket. He stood in front of the mirror,

“Looks good” He thought.

He wiggled a little bit, and the pants didn’t drop.

Good to go !

We might not get what we want ot how we want it, BUT we can always manipulate the reality to our expectation through patience and creativity.

So the next time to feel like shouting “WTF or FTW or WTH ” take a look around.. walk a few more steps and breathe a little deeper.

Expect the unexpected, Because life’s too interesting!

Cartoon Inspirations

Perth 1994

I close my eyes.

The force of the wind brushes against my face aggressively as I sprint across the playground. I’m moving at the speed of sound, and my arms are flung back, because of the ferocious velocity. Near approaching the border fencing of the playground I take a sharp left just as I’m about to slam into the wiring and skip over the roots of the large tree. Behind me, is my companion Tails, hovering from the sky, trying to keep up at my pace.

I catch my breath, while he approaches me slowly.

“What a slowpoke, keep up.” I cheekily remark.

In a split second I’m off again, entering the dangerous sand pit where Dr. Robotnik’s lair is disguised as a playground.

“The only way in to his lair is through that tunnel!” Shouts Tails from above.

I squat down and wrap my legs, and spin head forward on the spot swiftly, charging the energy to thrust forward through the tunnel. I call it the ‘spin ball’, As the sheer speed that I’m spinning, creates an aura of blue, which to the naked eye looks like a spinning ball. I roll rapidly through the tunnel , and bounce up to the monkey bars and climb across the lava river, when, I see Dr. Robotnik infront of me in his half- egged shaped hovercraft.

“Your too slow Hedgehog, now you die!” He claims while he flies off maniacally laughing.

The ground rumbles, and explosives blow up the walls, The playground was crumbling down fast, and I had to get out there pronto. My feet clench in my bright red sneakers, I take a deep breath, and accelerate as fast as I could through the collapsing structure. As I reach the end of the sand pit, and I hit the brakes hard just at the edge. I look down, it was at least a hundred feet drop.

Suddenly, from a distance an orange figure approaches, a helicopter speeding like a jet, as it comes closer I knew I was safe. A grin of relief, I bend over and brush the dust of my sneakers.

“Grab my hands Sonic!” Tails shouts.

“What If I don’t want to?” I joke, “I kind of like it here!”

“This is not the time to kid!”

I grin loudly and let out a laugh, as i jump off the ledge and grip on to his hands, We see Dr Robotnik in the distance.

It’s payback time.

My Childhood.

Imaginations run wild when your six years old. My infatuation with the video game and cartoon character Sonic the Hedgehog ran deep into my playtime away from my Sega Megadrive. Every day at Wesley College you could see a small, skinny Malay boy with his lanky, white friend sprint aimlessly around the Junior school playground, lost in our own reality where we were in Chaos Island, fighting Dr Robotnik from his evil plans to turn the woodland creatures into robots.

Reminisce back and remember a time when you drifted off into your own reality, where it brought you to exciting places and let you escape the boring, sobriety of the real world – Wasn’t being a kid great?

I believe Cartoon Characters are role models. They provide an inspiration to what we are today. They shape our personalities, and develop the way we think and act. Although subconsciously, they are a social factor in shaping what you are today.

Remember  when Doraemon or Dragon Ball Z was on TV? Where you sit intently and religiously on mornings before you head off to school. Or the comic books that you have read, where from young, they teach you wise lessons in life.

The value of Power (Spiderman), Comradere (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Feminism (Jem, Wonder woman), and even lessons in adulthood and dating:

Archie Andrew you playa.

Its amazing how a cartoon character can push so much influence in your life and personality. My first hero, Sonic the Hedgehog inspired me to live life in the fast lane, to take risks, and to act towards what is right. (He even inspired me to join the athletics team in school.)

However, the definition of my personality I can relate to Archie Andrews.

An Average Joe, with average attributes. However, his personality of being such a nice guy gets him along with everyone in Riverdale. His clueless attitude in relationships gets him in trouble, but his goodhearted nature gets him out of it. Archie has even inspired me to take the career path I choose to lead now, which is Journalism.

There’s one story I vividly remember reading when I was nine years old:

Archie and Reggie are on Summer holidays and get hired by the Riverdale Gazette, where Reggie’s dad is the editor. He puts them on assignment to find whatever story they like. Reggie heads straight off to the beach, knowing his power as a reporter allows him to interview hot babes. Archie is left clueless as always, and heads off to his neighborhood to find a story. What he finds is a large, cement truck parked in a driveway where he sees a couple of workers re-tarring the driveway. He interviews a worker and he responds:

“McGurk has us doing new driveways for his friends, pretty lucky people to be friends with such authority”

Archie scribbles down in his notepad, stuck in naivety to what he’s finding out. He goes an interview the residents of the neighborhood, and they reply in negativity.

“They’ve been doing this all week, all our tax money servicing all his friend’s driveways!”

Writing down his draft in his notepad, Archie is still left clueless.

“Well, not much here, just people doing normal work, maybe its a story.” He ponders.

As he returns back to editorial, Reggie’s dad is left disappointed at Reggie’s story ‘Blondes and Brunettes: What’s your summer flavour?”.

“We could use this as a filler, I suppose” He says, “Archie what have you got?”

He hands in his piece, as Reggie’s dad reads his story, his expression changes to shock, seeing that Archie had uncovered that Senator Mcgurk had been using taxpayers money to build new driveways for his friends.

“This his hot stuff! STOP THE PRESSES!” He shouts!

The next day, Archie’s parents are reading the paper exasperated and shocked by the frontpage headlines.

“Mcgurk’s a Rat” Archie’s dad exclaims

“Did you read the Byline?” Archie smirks,

His mom and Dad look at the small font,

” BY ARCHIE ANDREWS!” they shout!

I have sadly lost this issue. However, it has remained in my brain till now as it has made such an impact in my life. The comic showed me the excitement of reporting, and the pride you get when seeing your works published, which inspired me to do what I like to do, which is writing. And this is when I was nine years old mind you.

So I conclude,

Take a moment of Reflection.

Look at your childhood, and which Cartoons entertained you

Have changed you,

Inspired you.

And made you who are today.

Look at yourself,

Which cartoon character represents you?

What do cigarette butts and Malaysians have in common?

Delightfully Disgusting

Before you Malaysians take offense to the statement above, try and comprehend what this message is trying to convey about smoking:

WHY ARE WE SO LAZY WE CAN’T EVEN ASH OUR CIGARETTES PROPERLY?!

We all fall victim to this inevitable reality, LAZINESS, well smokers that is. Think about it this way people: smoking is already harmful for you, so why should you make it harmful to the environment?

BE CONSIDERATE!

Here are some GOOD you will do by increasing the amount of times you actually use an ashtray:

  • Reduce the overall pollution
  • Reduce the threat of wildlife (fishes and birds do think its food)
  • Reduce the number of forest fires
  • Reduce the amount of cigarettes smoked (since you cant find anywhere to ash the damn butt)

Have you ever wondered what happens when you throw a cigarette butt on the floor?

Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered product in the world. To better understand this, that’s BILLIONS of cigarettes thrown every single day! The butts aren’t made of cotton, nor is it biodegradable, the filters are composed of Cellulose acetate, which takes years for it to decompose.

Today, many smokers still keep ignorant as they contribute to the suffering of Mother Nature. The environment acts as one big ashtray for smokers, a sight no one would want future generations to witness.

STOP POLLUTING THE STREETS AND STOP SMOKING ! 🙂

I fucking love Chiddy Bang

“The Look”

While walking around the streets of Melbourne city, its amazing to observe the large selection of ethnic groups found in Victoria. With almost four corners of the globe gathering in Melbourne, the diverse nature of the society here adds value to what the small city has to offer. You can find a variety of everything, from everywhere, from restaurants, clothing stores, and intimate communities in some Suburbs (Brunswick, comes to my mind).

This would not be P.C. in KL.

What I have noticed personally, being a male, Malaysian, Malay in Melbourne is that I often receive and give off something I call “The Look” – (The facial expression when encountering another member of the same ethnicity or country or someone who looks relatively similar)

Whenever I cross paths with another ‘Malay’ male in Melbourne, either from brushing shoulders on the sidewalk, or passing by a group at a cafe, there is a expression of curiosity which is clearly evident from similar looking folk. “The Look” feels like a combination of acknowledgment, confusion, and even shock. This expression comes from encountering someone that looks similar to how you look, meaning, they don’t have to be malay, they just have to look Malay-ish for “The Look” to occur.

My Definition of  a “Malay-ish Male” :

  • Skin type: Dark ‘chocolate’ brown to a Mocha shade of Brown
  • Height: Below 6 feet
  • Facial Features: Nose, and bone features unrefined, mustache/goatee facial hair growth, tar discolourment of the teeth
  • Attire: The Trendy Kind – Skinny jeans, tight t-shirt, and sling bag or The Tourist – Big Pony Polo shirt (tucked in), and timberland shoes, with aviator sunglasses.

I understand the list is somewhat ambiguous and creates a horrible stereotype, but it is relevant to why “The Look” Occurs. The understanding that we are left pondering the question if – ”He is the same ethnicity as I am”, stands strong to the point why this facial expression occurs.

When this phenomena happens , It’s at a split second look, thus-forth an inability to capture the facial expression in motion. I take improvisation here with how “The Look” is like:

"The Look"

I get quite uncomfortable when exchanging ‘The Look’ it feels that after that we are obliged greet each other and then converse in Bahasa Malaysia whilst lambasting Malaysian politics and spontaneously play the guitar.

So in the situation, I give “The Look”,bend my head down, and power walk slightly faster away from the individual in sheepishness, always leaving with a lingering thought – “I wonder if he’s Malay?”

Joe’s Place Hartamas: New Boys on the Bloc

Fantastic Food on Four wheels.

KUALA LUMPUR:  Two years ago, two brothers from a small kampung in Kedah dreamt big to have their very own café in the city of Kuala Lumpur.

Today, they have one of the most successful cafés in the Hartamas area – Joe’s outdoor café.

Juhairi Khalid along with, his younger brother, Fauzi Khalid has long planned to open an outdoor café that catered to the young and trendy crowd.

Since arriving in Kuala Lumpur a couple of years back, Juhairi has always contemplated on creating a unique and interesting café to attract a new wave of customers.

Today, the Dream still lives on, as Joe’s outdoor café is becoming the new hotspot for residents in the Hartamas area.

Joe's in its Parked Glory

Co-owner and younger brother, Fauzi Khalid said “the reason why we chose Desa Sri Hartamas as our location was because of the people. Hartamas is like New York, this place never sleeps!”

Their outdoor style café has since gained accolade and the name Joe’s is synonymous with the local crowd in Hartamas.

Juhairi then added “Hartamas is the place where teenagers love to be. When you say hangout –they say Hartamas!”

Joe’s unique style of café welcomes the old and new generation of people to come and enjoy their services.

With a fusion of the Middle East, the café’s layout puts a twist to Arabian designs with Middle Eastern carpets and delightful shisha, while also keeping the Malaysian mamak trend.

Sisha Goodness.

The streaming crowd of customers every night requires a staff of about 8-12 to keep the place running smoothly. Each staff member carries out a certain responsibility for the café that gives Joe’s the merit of having fast and quality services.

“I always value the quality of service that people provide and I myself want people to value the services I can provide them”, said Juhairi, about his thoughts on customer service.

Their trademark yellow van offers many different varieties of traditional Malaysian foods. However, keeping current with the new trends, Joe’s café introduces their own specialties, like the funky Murtabak or Joe’s famous homemade burger, a must try at the café.

Azmi Ariff (no relation writer ariffjunior), a regular at Joe’s, believes that the café has brought many great memories and a feel-good vibe to him and his friends.

“It’s because of a place like this that makes me feel like I belong somewhere, and no other place treats me with such care and respect like Joe’s”.

Since the cafés opening in April 2009, seven months have passed; the place is still crowded every night with people from a diversity of races and backgrounds.

The dream that became a reality, Juhairi and Fauzi received an abundance of recognition which was more than what they bargained for in such a short period of time.

Fauzi believes that Joe’s is only a stepping stone, and that there will be more to come in the future.

“It was like a dream come true for me. I never would have thought that so many people would come here all the time, every night! But I guess when you believe in what you’re selling, people will support it and believe in you too”
